Many years ago the lace was the most important source of extra income in lacemaking centres. For little girls who attended lacemaking courses bobbin lacemaking was second in line immediately after the obbligatory school. Today, for many lace makers around the world, lace making is the most important of all unimportant activities in the world.
The exhibition shows lacemaking groups of the Karst region and their products, memories of the lace making course in Veliki Dol and the story where the lace and the architect Max Fabiani met.
The exhibition has been made by the members of the »Klinčki and kušinčki« (Bobbins and lacemaking pillows) group from the cultural society Kalunca and the Entity Štrekljeva domačija (Štrekelj’s homestead) in collaboration with the Elementary schools of Dutovlje, Komen and Sežana as well as the Slovene cultural societies Lipa from Bazovica and Tabor from Opčine. The exhibition was first open to the public on 11th June 2016 at Štrekljeva Štrekelj’s homestead in Gorjansko, also as part of the World Lace Congress programme in Ljubljana in 2016. It was designed as a travelling exhibition that will visit many places in the Karst.
