Jože Plečnik made designs for the renovation of the former Baroque baptistery in the parish church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, in Šutna.
As the renovation was underway in 1956 and 1957, the latter the year of Plečnik’s death, Plečnik participated in the project with designs only. The implementation of the project was held under the guidance of architects Anton Bitenc and Majda Neřima.
In the middle of the baptistery there is a baptismal font made of white marble with a brass lid, above which the cross is hung. The Crucified Christ is fixed to a cross of multi-colored marble, mounted onto a golden frame with clenched nails. The wall is covered with Podpeč marble framed in oak. The baptistery’s ceiling is adorned with sgraffito in the form of embroidery. Bitenc later made designs for a new baptistery and the altar which faces the congregation. The baptismal font was moved to the presbytery by the altar. Plečnik’s cross was moved to the chapel on the right side, below the choir loft.
