The seventh unique artistic bench is located by the Maribor Adult Education Centre on Maistrova ulica in Maribor. Its creator, academic painter Tomaž Plavec, named it “Kaluma”. It is made of recycled aluminium and oak wood. The ceremonial unveiling took place on 16 June 2016.
Academic painter Tomaž Plavec completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Ljubljana under Professor Bojan Gorenc. He is a member of the Ptuj city commission for gallery activities and has recently concentrated his interests on graphic art and sculpturing.
Story of the Bench
The bench features legs made from pressed, recycled aluminium that transition through the wooden seat in the shape of heads, symbolising new ideas, thoughts, and knowledge. The artist also symbolically addresses the integration and respect for diversity, as well as the removal of limitations that create divisions among people. The name of the bench is composed of syllables or words: KAL (from the Slovenian word for tempering), UM or UMETNOST (art), and ALUM (aluminium).
